Have you ever found yourself in this position?
My friend is a publicist. She/He helps me out with exposure and events. Why should I pay a professional/legitimate publicist instead of using her/him?
Let me be frank. If you have recruited a friend or family member to handle your publicity, FANTASTIC! It’s a wonderful luxury to have a person that is willing to take on that task on your behalf, especially if they are family or close to the camp. However, it is no mystery that mixing family and business can be a very touchy and sensitive arrangement.
I must let you know that you are taking a very risky chance with your career if you choose not to enlist the efforts of a professional publicist or PR practitioner. Although friends and family may know you intimately and the costs may be feasible, there is a thin line between family and professionalism. While we like to believe that our family and friends have our best interest at heart, have “contacts and connections”, and be a wiz at social marketing, those things don’t transfer into great media coverage and the ability to nurture existing and kindle new relationships.
While you may feel as though your can’t “afford” to hire a legit publicist, in many cases you nor your career can’t afford to not have one.
Just know that in the end, you will always get what you pay for…literally.
